This month is the 30th Anniversary of Spandau Ballet’s release of their third and biggest album “True”. Having formed in London in the late 1970s, Spandau Ballet became an integral part of, the New Romantic movement along with Duran Duran and Adam & The Ants.

Spandau Ballet were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, achieving ten Top Ten singles and four Top Ten albums in the UK between 1980 and 1990. The band split acrimoniously in 1990, but reunited in 2009, after some bitter court battles over copyright. The good news is that guitarist and songwriter Gary Kemp and lead singer Tony Hadley have buried their differences and Spandau Ballet are recording and touring again.

For all of that, it was one of their old songs “Gold” that became the unofficial anthem of the “London 2012 Olympics”, having been adopted by radio and television. Whilst the single “True” was Spandau Ballet’s biggest hit ( a No1 in 1983 ), “Gold” was the always the author’s favourite Spandau Ballet tune. For me, Spandau Ballet’s music was hit and miss – some of their songs were sublime, others rather bland.
