It was 50 years ago today that the group that briefly became Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, released their first record. On the 5th October 1962, the Beatles released their first vinyl single “Love Me Do”, a fairly innocuous, sweet little song that gave no hint of what was to come whatsoever, in terms of the force and power of the music that the Beatles were to produce over the following eight years!!

“Love Me Do” was no more than a sugar coated love song , undistinguishable from other pop songs in the chart of October 1962. Having been released on the 5th October, it charted the following week, peaking at No17. On the strength of this debut single, the Beatles could so easily have been a one hit wonder. However with EMI Parlophone music producer George Martin backing and guiding the Beatles all the way, they struck gold with the more powerful, catchy follow up single “Please Please Me”, which reached No2 in the UK charts. Two No1s, “From Me To You” and “She Loves You” quickly followed and the rest is history.

It strikes me that what separated the Beatles from the rest in the early years is that they would pick up a style and perfect it very quickly, which they did with their early poppy love songs. By 1964 and 1965 the Beatles music was barely recognisable from the early pop songs, with the release of the singles “Help” and “A Hard Day’s Night” from the film’s of the same name. Although the films were of a light hearted nature, the theme songs had a deeper message. This was very much a portent of what was to come with the release of the album “Rubber Soul” in 1966, which took the Beatles in a completely different direction. The following years saw the Beatles music become increasingly more sophisticated and serious minded as they developed into a studio band, with the recordings of “Revolver”, “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “The White Album” being the stand out Beatles albums between 1966 and 1970.
