Spare a thought for the Glitter Band. Arguably they were as an important and integral part of the Glam Rock movement in the early to mid-1970s as Marc Bolan & T.Rex, David Bowie, Slade, Sweet and Mud……..

Speaking of Mud, unfortunately the Glitter Band’s name and reputation seem to have been “muddied” through their association with the disgraced Gary Glitter ( as his original backing band ). This is surely why you never hear them on the Radio 2 or the Smooth Radio playlist. The other glam rock artists listed appear on Radio 2’s retro chart show, “Pick of the Pops”, so why not the Glitter Band? It can only be because they are Gary Glitter’s former backing band and carry his surname, albeit a preposterous pseudonym!!

It is perfectly understandable that Gary Glitter has not been heard on the radio airwaves in the UK since 2000, but his appalling crimes should not make the Glitter Band toxic to radio producers and presenters. So if Bob Shennan, Radio 2’s programme controller, should read this Record Press blog, then please consider lifting this “unofficial” ban in time to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Glitter Band releasing their first single ( not as Gary Glitter’s backing band ) “Angel Face” in April 1974.

The reality is that the Glitter Band’s chart success lasted little more than a year and arguably may not have happened without the band’s association with Gary Glitter, but nevertheless their songs stand on their own merit as exemplified by this Record Press Top 5 Best Glitter Band Songs –
