As kids we all dressed up for a few hours and became an imaginary person but as adults most of us haven’t adopted an alter ego for a day, let alone a full year!!…….

Will Brooker, a film and cultural studies professor at Kingston University, is spending a few months at a time experiencing specific stages of David Bowie’s 40-year career from Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane to the Thin White Duke. He will be adopting David Bowie’s eating habits and devouring the literature he read, in order to get inside Bowie’s mind.

The professor is currently occupying David Bowie’s 1974 Philadelphia soul period and wearing thick blue eye shadow with a shock of orange hair. He explained: “The idea is to inhabit Bowie’s head space at points in his life and career to understand his work from an original angle, while retaining a critical and objective perspective at the same time – a kind of split persona perhaps.”

He has been commissioned to write a monograph about the singer called “Forever Stardust”, so his starting point as David Bowie goes back the late 1960s and the original release of “Space Oddity” in 1969. In order to immerse himself in the character completely, he must listen to the songs David Bowie would have heard, read the same books and watch the same films as Bowie would have seen. In addition he has subjected himself to sleep deprivation and only eaten red peppers and drunk milk on some occasions.
