Soul singer Dionne Warwick has filed for bankruptcy in the US with debts nearing $10 million (£6.6m) in taxes since 1991. This is particularly tragic as Dionne Warwick has sold more than 100 million records in a 50 year career and at 72 years of age deserves to be financially secure, living a comfortable lifestyle, having given her public immense pleasure and enjoyment!!

Clearly Dionne Warwick has been the victim of poor financial management, with this sad news following on from the tragedy of losing her cousin Whitney Houston last year. If anyone in pop music deserves a happy and peaceful dotage, it is Dionne Warwick. To put this into sharp focus, it was only a year ago that Dionne celebrated 50 years in show business with a special event at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Dionne Warwick won her first of five Grammy awards in 1968 with “Do You Know The Way To San Jose?”, with a second coming two years later, for the album “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again”.

Dionne Warwick is without doubt one of the greatest female soul singers of all time, and takes her place at top table with Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey and Dusty Springfield, who would make up the author’s Top 5 best female soul singers.

Dionne Warwick has the most delightful, silky smooth soul voice and became the protégée of songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Bacharach and David penned some of her greatest hits and in a completely reciprocal and symbiotic relationship they found the perfect vehicle for their classic songs in Dionne Warwick. She brought Bacharach and David’s songs to life in a way that few other singers, bar the aforementioned four, could have done!!
