It had to happen…..a musical showcasing some of the Beatles most memorable hits is to be staged in London later this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four’s 1962 debut single “Love Me Do”. The author’s flimsy claim to fame is that I entered the world the day before the Beatles released “Love Me Do”on the 5th October 1962 …..and there the comparison starts and abruptly finishes!!
The Beatles musical, entitled “Let It Be” will run at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London from the 14th September 2012 to the 19th January 2013. It only became feasible after full theatrical rights to most of The Beatles’ back catalogue were granted for a West End production for the first time. Other Beatles songs due to feature in the production include “Twist and Shout”, “Yesterday” and “Hey Jude”.
What is truly amazing is that it has taken until now for someone to stage a Beatles musical, especially with the runaway success of the Abba musical “Mamma Mia”. However better late than never. Perhaps we might get to see Led Zeppelin, Elton John or David Bowie’s music transferred to the stage in the not too distant future.
