Traditionally Christmas has been the time when the music / recording industry sold its greatest volume of singles.

From the 1950s through to the current day, the most popular artists and bands would release a festive themed song. It all started with Harry Belafonte’s Xmas No1 “Mary’s Boy Child” in 1957, a song which returned to the pinnacle of the Xmas charts in 1978, courtesy of “Disco Divas” Boney M. They were the biggest selling band of 1978 and were expected to produce a Xmas hit and duly obliged with “Mary’s Boy Child”. The trend had started a few years earlier in the Glam Rock era, when Slade and Wizzard went head to head for the Xmas No1 in 1973 with “Merry Xmas Everybody” and  “I Wish It Could Be Xmas Everyday” respectively. The positive, upbeat tempo and theme of their Xmas songs were heightened and accentuated by the backdrop of power cuts and a three day working week in the UK, caused by the miner’s strike. Glam rockers Mud followed the trend the following year with the Xmas No1 in 1974 “Lonely This Christmas” and the die was cast for the next thirty years.

The trend for Christmas themed songs being the Xmas No1 continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s with Band Aid and Cliff Richard having notable multi successes in these decades, but sadly the altruistic Bob Geldof & Band Aid the saintly Cliff Richard have long since been replaced at the top of the festive charts by the “Son of Beelzebub”, Simon Cowell and his hyped up X Factor winners!!
