Eric Clapton is releasing his 21st studio album on 12th March. Entitled ‘Old Sock’ it will feature two new tracks as well as covers of ten of his all-time favourite songs. So plenty of cover versions but very little in the way of new material, rendering the new album old stock as much as an old sock in need of darning!!
Eric Clapton’s ‘Old Sock’ will be a fusion of genres and see Eric Clapton incorporate rock and blues, including Gary Moore’s ‘Still Got The Blues’ and Leadbelly’s ‘Goodnight Irene’, reggae (Peter Tosh’s ‘Till Your Well Runs Dry’) and jazz tunes including ‘All of Me’ and George and Ira Gershwin’s ‘Love Is Here to Stay’.
One of the guest musicians on “Old Sock” is Sir Paul McCartney, who plays bass and sings on ‘All of Me’, returning the favour after Eric Clapton played guitar on Paul McCartney’s latest album ‘Kisses on the Bottom’. Eric Clapton’s former Blind Faith band mate Steve Winwood will also play organ on ‘Still Got the Blues’, R&B singer Chaka Khan provides vocals on ‘Get On Over’, whilst ‘Angel’ features JJ Cale on guitar and lead backing vocals.
Eric Clapton will support the new album with a US arena tour, concluding at the Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Like so many artists and musicians of his generation, inevitably Eric Clapton is running dry on creative fuel – hence the collaborations and cover renditions on this latest album. The author has always had a certain ambivalence towards Eric Clapton. Although he has written some great masterpieces, I have always felt that he sometimes lacked warmth and sincerity. At times there seems to be an inpenetrable coldness and aloofness surrounding Eric Clapton that makes his work that of a clinical technician. But then the vindication comes with sensitive and passionate songs like “Wonderful Tonight” and “Layla”.
So the author’s reservations will not prevent me from providing the customary Recordpress Top 5 Best Eric Clapton Songs –
1) Layla ( Derek & Dominos ) ( 1972 )
2) I Shot The Sheriff ( Bob Marley ) ( 1974 )
3) Wonderful Tonight ( 1978 )
4) For Your Love ( Yardbirds ) ( 1964 )
5) Knocking On Heaven’s Door ( Bob Dylan ) ( 1975 )
