Duran Duran will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first hit single with a special programme on ITV1 ( Duran Duran: One Night Only ) on Sunday night, when they will perform their back catalogue of hits as well as showcasing their new album. Although not of a choral nature or involving
hymns, the Sunday night TV show really will be a “Songs of Praise”, as this tribute to Duran Duran will remind us just what fine songwriters they are!!
The ITV1 show, hosted by Daybreak’s Christine Bleakley, is designed to coincide with the release of a special edition of the group’s latest album “All You Need is Now”. ITV promise “a rare insight” into the group’s career, with “exclusive, never-before-seen archive footage, and in-depth interviews with each of the band members.” Is it really thirty years since Duran Duran first graced the Charts with “Planet Earth”? It is indeed and Planet Earth is a very different place to the one we occupied in 1981, with the decline of Communist Eastern Europe, and the ascent of Communist China as an economic world powerhouse. In the world of music, the intervening thirty years have seen the decline and virtual disappearance of the vinyl record format that Duran Duran first released their recordings on; CDs have come and almost gone; and the Mp3 download via the internet is the preferred music acquisition format of the majority of consumers today.
However throughout all these monumental changes, Duran Duran have somehow defied science and technology, and remained fresh and vital in body and in terms of the body of their work. Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor look as good as ever – their good looks and charisma undiminished by the passage of time. And their music is still as relevant and stylish as it was in the Time Taste Forgot, better known as the 1980s!! The greatest irony is that the group took their name from a character in the 1960’s Sci-fi film Barbarella staring Jane Fonda – the film has inevitably dated; Duran Duran the group have not.
On a personal level, Duran Duran’s music soundtracked my years as a student at Trent Polytechnic. Therefore whenever I hear “Girls on Film”, “Hungry like the Wolf”, “Save a Prayer”, “Rio”, “Is there Something I should Know” and “Union of the Snake” I am immediately transported back to raucous nights spent in the Student Union Bar, and the sounds emanating from it’s jukebox. Although “Student Union Bar of the Snakebite” would have been a more apt title, and sums up my misspent youth and student years perfectly!!
For many Duran Duran’s second No1 “The Reflex” was their defining moment – it was their “Waterloo”, “Vienna”, “Nights in White Satin”
or “Whiter Shade of Pale”. And whilst Simon Le Bon and the rest of the band’s reflexes may not be as sharp as they were in the 1980s, this song along with the rest of their back catalogue is as sharp and stylish as ever. And sartorially the band are also as sharp and stylish as ever they were. Duran Duran have truly stood the test of time and we can all look forward to their new recordings as well as their archive hits at 8.30pm on ITV1 ( Duran Duran: One Night Only ) on Sunday night.
