Former New Order bass player Peter Hook is suing his ex-bandmates for millions of pounds in a long standing quarrel over royalties.

Peter Hook claims he has lost in excess of £2.3m since the three other band members set up a company without him to process the band’s income in 2011. Peter Hook has accused Bernard Sumner and Stephen and Gillian Morris of “pillaging” the pop group’s assets.

The three of them have responded to this claim by stating that they have treated Peter Hook fairly and that his share of the royalties is reasonable. At a High Court hearing, Judge David Cooke ruled that Peter Hook was not acting out of “spite” and cleared the way for him to take his complaints to a full trial.

New Order, formed by the surviving members of Joy Division in 1980 after lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide, are best known for anthemic hits Blue Monday, True Faith, World In Motion and Regret. Peter Hook parted company with the band in 2007, but the other members carried on without him and continued to use the New Order name.

New Order’s latest album Music Complete ( minus Peter Hook ) was released in September and reached No2 in the UK charts, making it their highest-charting album since 1993. Meanwhile Peter Hook has been touring with a new band under the name Peter Hook and the Light.
