Apple have announced that the iTunes Store recently passed 5 million Beatles songs and 1 million Beatles albums sold worldwide. “Abbey Road” is the current best-selling Beatles alBeatles bum in the USA, while “Here Comes the Sun” is the currently best-selling Beatles song globally.

It was only on November 16, 2010 that Apple began selling all 13 of the Beatles’ remastered studio albums with iTunes LPs, the two-volume “Past Masters” compilation and the iconic “Red” and “Blue” compilations. tracks were finally released for sale via iTunes, following years of protracted legal negotiations between Apple and The Beatles’ record label EMI Group. What these latest statistics from Apple prove conclusively, but not surprisingly , is that the demand for the Beatles music is as great as ever. Whatever the music playing format, the Beatles’ appeal is undiminished as we enter the sixth decade since the group’s inception!!

However just because there are upgrades and improvements in technology, doesn’t mean that we can’t cherish the past and it’s idiosyncratic artefacts of great charm and character!! This ethos certainly applies to vinyl records. For all the advancements in technology since vinyl records became obsolete, we still hanker after what vinyl represents – a simpler time of greater assurances and security. Nobody in their right mind – not even Tony Blackburn who has clearly never been in his right mind – would ever suggest that we return to the crackling, hissing, jumping vinyl record. But most people would agree that vinyl had more personality than the Compact Disc, and certainly more character than today’s invisible MP3 download!!
