The BBC has been accused of being anti the Bay City Rollers, ironically in the week a documentary on the band, Rollermania, was aired on BBC4.

The BBC has defended its decision to reject a complaint of bias for not playing a Bay City Rollers song in more than 310 shows by a BBC Radio 2 DJ. The complainant said the 1970s band the Bay City Rollers had not featured once in six years of DJ Johnnie Walker’s BBC Radio 2 show “Sounds of the 70s”.

The complainant, who said the Bay City Rollers are “Scotland’s answer to the Beatles”, said licence fee payers were entitled to hear what they wanted and that the show’s DJ was “unreasonably biased” against the band. The complainant accused the BBC of showing bias against Scottish licence fee payers.

The BBC freely admitted that Johnnie Walker had made “no secret” of his “poor opinion and dislike” of the Bay City Rollers, but his job is to play classic tracks he feels his audience will “most enjoy”. The BBC panel added there was no evidence that his decision not to play Bay City Roller’s songs was because they were a Scottish band.

The Record Press author can see no grounds for an anti Bay City Rollers bias on the BBC, particularly in the week a Bay City Rollers documentary “Rollermania” was aired on BBC4. It was a fun hour that reminded anyone of my vintage that the “Rollermania Rollercoaster” was one hell of a crazy ride, although there was little in the band’s music in the documentary to merit the Bay City Rollers being put on a par and pedestal with The Beatles!!
