The Spice Girls last night attended the world premiere of “Viva Forever!”, a West End musical built around their hit songs.

“Viva Forever!” has been written by Jennifer Saunders and recounts the tale of a girl band who pursue stardom on a reality TV series. Although the Spice Girls – Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisholm), Scary (Melanie Brown), Baby (Emma Bunton), Posh (Victoria Beckham) and Ginger (Geri Halliwell) do not appear as characters in “Viva Forever, the plot has echoes of the Spice Girls’ story.

The Spice Girls achieved global fame with the release of their first single “Wannabe” in 1996, but within two years Geri Halliwell had left the band. The quintet have since reconciled, staging a comeback tour in 2007.

“Viva Forever!” has much in common with “Mamma Mia!”, the ABBA musical which has taken more than £1.2bn at the box office since it opened in 1999. Both musicals were produced by Judy Cramer.

When it comes to Boy Bands there are many contenders for the “Ultimate Top Boy Band” title such Take That, Bay City Rollers, Osmonds, Boyzone, Westlife, One Direction and JLS. There is little or no debate over the “Biggest Girl Band”, although the author has a particular affection for the Sugababes and also the All Saints. However both bands were eclipsed by the Spice Girls, who’s sassy personalities seduced the UK and beyond.

The Spice Girls were a force of nature – all very different in personality and as such appealed to a broad church. This mass appeal made them the most powerful girl band in the world, leading to the Spice Girls being the first act to have its first six singles reach number one in the UK.
