Over the past forty years, so called “Boy Bands” have come and gone, with the regularity of the ebb and flow of the tides…..but Take That have proved to have the power of the recent Japanese Tsunami, and their wave of popularity is dominating the “Pacific of Pop”!!

What is Take That’s enduring appeal? With the exception of the original “Boy Band”, the Beatles, Take That have sold more vinyl records, CDs and Mp3 downloads than any other Boy Band in the history of pop music in the UK. And the parallels with the Beatles almost certainly hold the key to Take That’s enduring success. Firstly like the Beatles, the band members have great charisma, charm and cheekiness. Not to mention the same Northern wit and irreverence!! In addition, although not in the same league as Lennon and McCartney ( and who is?!! ), Gary Barlow is a fine songwriter, and Robbie Williams and Mark Owen certainly make a strong contribution to songwriting, just as George Harrison and Ringo Starr “chipped in” before them. Thirdly, and perhaps most significantly, Take That appeal to a universal audience and market, from grandmothers to grandchildren, and everybody inbetween!! Put it this way, the author who is a redblooded forty something male, has a Take That CD in his collection, and he is not ashamed to say it!!

This is a significant fact, because apart from a handful of Monkees and Bay City Rollers vinyl singles, bought in my misguided early adolescence, I possess  no other boy band music in my vast vinyl and CD collection. I would defend this confession by saying that both groups, although they neither wrote the songs or played on their studio recordings, possessed a certain merit in their music. But since the hey day of these two early and original boy bands, many have come and gone. The list is expansive – Osmonds, Jackson 5, Back Street Boys, Blue, Westlife, Boyzone, East 17 and New Kids on the Block to name but a few……they were all new kids once, but unlike Take That have not remained on the block into adulthood in terms of continued chart success and new recordings!!

And I see no reason why Take That’s popularity and appeal will not continue for decades to come, picking up new fans with each generation , just as the Beatles have done over the decades.  They may have been a manufactured band at the outset like all the aforementioned boy bands, but that’s where the comparison ends. Take That are truly “back for good” and here to stay!! Just to prove it the group’s new EP / album “Progressed” is available from this Monday 13th June!!
