As reported in last week’s NME, David Bowie has “retired”, according to his biographer Paul Trynka, who says he believes it would be “a miracle” if Bowie returned to the frontline of music. Paul Trynka, who has written a new book about David Bowie, entitled “Starman”, has said he believes Bowie, who has not released an album since 2003’s “Reality”, will only return if he “can deliver something seismic”.

Allowing for the fact that Paul Trynka is understandably looking to generate some publicity for his new book, it doesn’t come as a great shock that David Bowie has retired!! To all intents and purposes, he retired virtually 30 years ago, with his chart swansongs – “Let’s Dance”, “China Girl” and “Modern Love”. Chart success since then has been very fleeting……..but it matters not, because what a voluminous and fabulous back catalogue he produced in the preceding ten years!!

It is the 40th anniversary this year of arguably David Bowie’s finest album, “Hunky Dory”, which spawned wonderful tracks like “Changes”, “Life on Mars” and “Oh you Pretty Things”. David Bowie may have retired, but his music will never retire, because like all great music, it transcends time and space, like so many of his musical spaceman / alien alter egos and protagonists. If David Bowie and his various personae, like Ziggy Stardust and Major Tom, are of another world, then so is his music – it will be still be as vital and relevant in 50 or 100 years time as it was in the 1970s. There are few music artists that fall into the “Immortal & Timeless Category”, but two coincidentally share David Bowie’s Birthday on the 8th January – Elvis Presley and Shirley Bassey!!
