It was with great pleasure that I learned of the news that on the 5th March 2013, a collection of 12 previously unreleased recordings by Jimi Hendrix will manifest itself in the public arena. The “People, Hell and Angels” album will document Jimi Hendrix in 1968 and 1969 as he worked on material away from his band, the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Jimi Hendrix apparently was considering new, experimental directions for “First Rays of the New Rising Sun”, the planned double-album follow-up to “Electric Ladyland” before his untimely death. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, “Hendrix toys with horns, keyboards, percussion and a second guitar, exploring fresh diversions from his legendary guitar work. The album artwork is simple, yet as distinct as Hendrix’s signature guitar wails”.

The news of an album of unreleased Jimi Hendrix tracks fills the author with great joy, because if ever there was an artist where you felt a poignant sense of unfulfilled promise and potential, it is Jimi Hendrix!! The words “original” and “genius” are overused in the media, especially where entertainment is concerned, but both adjectives apply equally to Jimi Hendrix.

Much emphasis is always placed quite naturally on Jimi Hendrix’s signature guitar work and sound, but I have always been a big fan of his vocals too. Would “Purple Haze”, “Hey Joe” or “All along the watch tower” have been quite so vital without the dynamics of Jimi Hendrix’s vocals to complement his guitar work?
