Every 9th October since 1981, I have lamented the loss of John Lennon – the lost opportunities and potential and the nagging, knawing feeling of what might have been. This year, I decided to put keyboard to screen and pay my lasting tribute in prose……..

“Imagine John Lennon the Septagenarian”

It would have been your 73rd birthday today

By now John Lennon would have been grey

Life is supposed to start as you turn forty

To end at that tender age is such a big pity

Your assassination was completely pointless

Bringing the curtain down early on a genius

All of your fans feel totally and utterly cheated

Because we know Lennon will never be repeated

Think of the unwritten songs we will never  know

Sadness because it really was not your time to go

America destroys the icons we all love the most

But they will never eliminate your spirit and ghost

We will always have your compassion, wit and wisdom

As you reside with great poets in Heaven’s kingdom
