Bryan Adams has retained his UK record for the most consecutive weeks at No1, after Drake was finally dislodged from the top of the UK singles chart, a week shy of equalling the record.
The Drake song One Dance has dropped to No5, replaced at No1 by the Justin Bieber single Cold Water. Justin Bieber’s
song is a collaboration with dance acts Major Lazer and MØ, whose 2015 hit Lean On is Spotify’s most-streamed song of all time. Cold Water by Justin Bieber has accrued up to 102,000 combined sales (comprising 47,000 downloads and 5.6 million streams) which is almost double the number Drake achieved last week, in his fifteenth and final week at No1.
So Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do (I Do It For You) remains the UK’s longest-running No1, having spent 16 weeks at the top of the charts in 1991. Ultimately, the Drake ditty proved no match for the Bryan Adams anthem, soundtrack to the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, which Bryan Adams wrote with co-writer Mutt Lange in less than 45 minutes.
At the time Bryan Adams said: “It was a moment that I’ve only felt a few times. It’s the moment when you know it’s a
good song, you don’t know if it’s a hit, you just know it’s good.” But if the song’s longevity at No1 was tedious in the UK, we had a lucky escape!! In Bryan Adams’ home country of Canada the song remained at No1 for 39 weeks.
Of course there is a real irony that hasn’t escaped the Record Press author – Bryan Adam’s No1 record was preserved by a fellow Canadian, Justin Bieber!! Clearly a Canadian conspiracy!!
