British artists have achieved their highest ever share of global album sales. Figures just released from the British Phonographic Industry demonstrate UK music acts secured 13.3% of worldwide sales in 2012, increasing from 12.6% in 2011.
Albums from Adele, One Direction and Ed Sheeran spearheaded the album sales surge, with Adele’s 21 being the biggest selling album globally for the second year running. UK groups and solo artists have contributed the world’s top-selling album for five of the past six years.
One Direction’s two albums, Up All Night and Take Me Home, were placed in the top five for 2012 in terms of global album sales. Whilst in the US, British acts accounted for one in seven of albums sold in 2012, which is the largest share ever. Adele, One Direction and Mumford & Sons are responsible for four of the five biggest-selling artist albums in the US. In the UK, British acts represented a 51.9% share of album sales. Geoff Taylor, BPI Chief Executive, sums it up perfectly: “Music is fundamental to Britain’s identity as a nation and the world is singing with us.”
