Novelist and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, whose film scripts for “Howards End” and “A Room With A View” won her two Oscars, has died aged 85.

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala made more than 20 films with producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory over 40 years including “A Room With a View” and “Howards End”, for both of which won her Oscars in 1987 and 1993 respectively. Both films were adapted from novels by EM Forster, a novelist favoured by the Merchant Ivory production team, although it was David Lean that wrote and directed the 1984 film version of EM Forster’s “A Passage To India”.

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was nominated for a third Oscar in 1994 for the script for “The Remains of the Day”, but although missing out on that occasion, she did win the Booker Prize for her 1975 novel “Heat and Dust”, meaning she was the only person to have won both an Oscar and the Booker. The Merchant Ivory adaption of “Heat And Dust” is one of the Recordpress author’s favourite Merchant Ivory films, along with “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day”.
