Top 10 Space Travel Songs to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the First Moon Landing

Remembering the Night Humanity Reached the Moon

Is it really fifty years since my dad woke me in the middle of the night to watch the first moon landing on 20 July 1969?
I can still picture the grainy black-and-white footage of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepping onto the lunar surface. Even now, the moment feels slow and deliberate—an intentional performance for billions watching history unfold.

At nearly seven years old, I knew I was seeing something that would define an era. It remains one of my strongest memories of the 1960s.

From NASA to the Charts

The moon landing didn’t just change science; it changed sound.
That same summer, Thunderclap Newman’s Something in the Air topped the UK charts. Within a few short years, space travel had inspired an entire musical movement.

When NASA ended its lunar missions in 1972, artists filled the silence with imagination. Space became metaphor—freedom, loneliness, curiosity—and for one ambitious Londoner named David Jones, soon to be David Bowie, it became a career.

A Golden Age of Space Songs

The early ’70s brought a galaxy of cosmic pop. Elton John, The Kinks, and others joined Bowie in sound-tracking humanity’s fascination with the heavens. Decades later, acts like R.E.M. and Babylon Zoo would keep the orbit alive.

The Definitive Top 10 Space Travel Songs

  1. David Bowie – Life on Mars? (1973)

  2. David Bowie – Starman (1972)

  7. Babylon Zoo – Spaceman (1996)

  8. The Kinks – Supersonic Rocket Ship (1972)

  9. Carpenters – Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft (1977)

  10. R.E.M. – Man on the Moon (1991)

Each track captures the awe that followed Apollo 11 and celebrates humanity’s urge to reach beyond Earth.

The Legacy of 1969

The moon landing was more than technology; it was inspiration. Musicians translated that sense of wonder into melody, creating a lasting soundtrack for exploration. Half a century later, these songs still remind us how limitless imagination can be.

AC/DC: From Pacific Highway To Highway To Hell

This is the Record Press tribute to Malcolm Young who passed away on the 18th November 2017 – RIP Rock & Roll Man……

AC/DC were the pioneers of Australian rock and pop music: created in Sydney and exported via the Pacific Highway to the USA and the rest of the world.

Yes you could argue that the Easybeats as forerunners were technically the pioneers of Australian rock and pop music. The Record Press author would argue that the Easybeats were the catalyst with their international 1965 hit Friday On ACDCMy Mind, but beyond that did not have the longevity or sustained impact to really be classed as Australian rock and pop music pioneers.

No the Australian rock band AC/DC, formed in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, brothers of Easybeats guitarist George, should take the plaudits for Architects of Aussie Rock. If the Record Press author were being a provocative “Pom”, I might argue that brothers Malcom, Angus and George Young emigrated to Sydney from Glasgow in 1963 and therefore the real architects of Australian rock and pop music were “Poms”. However I would not be that churlish!!

Although AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album High Voltage on the 17th February 1975, Malcolm and Angus Young were always the lynchpins in the band. For five years AC/DC had a settled line up until months after recording the album Highway To Hell lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died on the 19th February 1980 after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. AC/DC had achieved so much in those five short years but there was much more to come.

Such was Bon Scott’s charisma and influence, AC/DC considered disbanding, but encouraged by Bon Scott’s father, acdc highway to hellthey decided to find a new lead vocalist. Ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson was auditioned and selected to replace Bon Scott. Later that year, the band released the new album, Back in Black, which was recorded as a tribute to Bon Scott. The album launched them to new heights of success and became their all-time best-seller.

AC/DC’s next album For Those About to Rock We Salute You was their first album to reach No1 in the USA where they were to forge incredible success over the years: AC/DC have sold more than 200 million records worldwide but of those  71.5 million albums have been sold in the USA alone, making them the tenth-best-selling band in the US. Back in Black has sold an estimated 50 million units worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-selling album by any artist and the third-highest-selling album by any band.

And to think AC/DC were the original Aussie pub rock band who with no precedent to model themselves on became one of the world’s largest rock bands: For That Reason, AC/DC We Salute You………

Here’s a reminder why we salute AC/DC, with this Top 5 Best AC/DC Songs –

The Definitive Top 20 Best Psychedelic Songs of the 1960s

For the Record Press author the three abiding passions in terms of music genres throughout my life have always been heavy rock, soul and funk and that most niche of all niches, psychedelia.

It is almost impossible to say which band launched the psychedelic music movement but as the influence of the drug LSD took a vice like grip on the cultural counter movement emanating from the UFO Club in Tottenham Court Road, Soho in 1966,  it meant that psychedelic music spectacularly peaked in 1967.

What I love about psychedelic songs is that they take you on a surreal, mystical, magical journey that otherwise could only be gained in the fantasia of childhood novels or dreams…..Or through mind altering drugs, but you wouldn’t necessarily want to go down that route.

The psychedelic path was well trodden by the majority of the leading bands of the time like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Small Faces, Rolling Stones and Traffic. They all appear in this definitive Record Press Top 20 Best Psychedelic Songs of the 1960s –

Beatles Sgt Pepper 50th anniversary does not mask the hype!!

It was 50 years ago today on the 1st June 1967 that the Beatles and EMI / Parlophone released the Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band album.

For most of the intervening years Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band has been lauded as the Beatles’ seminal and most iconic album. At the risk of being controversial ( God forbid!! ) the Record Press author does not concur with this viewpoint.

Undoubtedly Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band has three of the Beatles finest songs on it – the dream-like “A Day In The Life”, the psychedelic “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” and the atmospheric “She’s Leaving Home”.

These superlative tracks are backed up by good songs in the form of the title track “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band” and “With a Little Help from our Friends”. At best I would suggest the remaining songs on the album are mediocre and almost feel like album fillers.

Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band would have been far stronger for the inclusion of “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane” which EMI decided not to include on the album, preferring to release them as a “Double A” side single. This decision backfired horrendously when the single was kept off the No1 spot by the cheesy “Release Me” by Englebert Humperdinck!!

I would argue that Rubber Soul and Revolver completely overshadow Sgt Pepper and are far superior albums……On this basis Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band would not get into this Record Press Top 5 best albums of all time –

David Bowie final five years to be featured in BBC documentary

The last five years of the life of David Bowie will be explored in a BBC documentary, to be broadcast to coincide with the first anniversary of his death on the 8th January 2017.

The BBC documentary will focus on the final two David Bowie albums, The Next Day and Blackstar, alongside the stage musical Lazarus, which recently opened in London.david bowie

It will be directed by Francis Whately as a follow-up to his acclaimed 2013 documentary, David Bowie: Five Years, which the Record Press author saw recently and thoroughly enjoyed.

The BBC Two documentary will be part of a BBC season marking the anniversary of David Bowie’s death from cancer in January 2016. An unreleased a capella vocal David Bowie recorded for Lazarus will form part of the film, called David Bowie: The Last Five Years.

Among the contributors are David Bowie’s long-time producer Tony Visconti and the musicians who played on The Next Day and Blackstar, who will recreate some of the star’s final studio sessions.

Francis Whately explains: “I always hoped that I would make another film about Bowie as we were only able to david bowie heroesscratch the surface in the first film, but I just didn’t expect it to be this soon. However, looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to re-examine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change – Bowie the chameleon. Instead, I would like to show how the changes were often superficial, but the core themes in his work were entirely consistent – alienation, mortality and fame.”

The season will also see BBC Four broadcasting Bowie at the BBC, a compilation of rarely-seen archive of the star’s performances and interviews at the BBC, spanning more than 40 years. Radio 2 will dedicate an entire documentary to the star’s seminal hit Life On Mars, while 6 Music will mark what would have been the 70th birthday of on Sunday 8th January with a day of special programming.

Which 1980s male solo act would you like to see return?

1980s pop star Rick Astley has returned to the top of the UK album chart after an interval of 29 years.

The Rick Astley comeback album, 50, beat new releases by Tom Odell, Paul McCartney, ELO and Drake to take the No1 spot. Rick commented: “It’s amazing, it’s incredible. It’s been a very, very, very long time.”rick astley

Rick Astley was an integral part of the Stock, Aitken, Waterman hit factory in the late 1980s and the Record Press author was not a fan. Although I recognised his undoubted talent and the quality of his vocals, I detested the songs Pete Waterman foisted upon him in the name of commercial “art”!! However 30 years on Rick Astley has finally arrived, fulfilling his potential and promise, with new material of a much more mature, thoughtful and soulful sound as you might expect of a middle aged man!!

Rick Astley has been in a fierce battle for the number one slot over the last week, changing places with Tom Odell on several occasions. In the end, he outsold the Tom Odell by 3,700 copies. According to the Official Chart Company, Rick Astley sold more physical CDs, while Tom Odell secured more digital sales and streams.

Rick Astley joked: “I like Tom Odell. I bought his last album, and I’m going to buy this one as well, but I’ve held off from buying it this week!” To put his achievement into perspective, Rick Astley last topped the chart in 1987, three paul youngyears before Tom Odell was born, with his debut album Never Gonna Give You Up.

Rick Astley added: “Elton John’s sent a few texts over the last couple of days and just called me now to celebrate and said ‘just make sure you enjoy it. He’s one of those people I’ve always respected… so it was a nice moment to get that congratulations.”

I know many of you loved Rick Astley in the 1980s and with better song choices I would have been a member of his fan club. In terms of a 1980s white solo singer with a velvety soulful voice, my choice would have to be Paul Young. He had the voice and backed it up with great songs like Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home), Love of the Common People and Love Will Tear Us Apart. My favourite Paul Young songs have to be Come Back and Stay, I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down and Everytime You Go Away.

ELO will bring a certain Mr Blue Sky to Glastonbury 2016

Jeff Lynne’s ELO will fill Glastonbury’s “legends” slot on Sunday 26th June 2016 and the band’s signature song Mr Blue Sky will hopefully be a good omen for sunny, dry weather at Glasto this year!!

Glastonbury’s “legends” Sunday slot is one of the highlights of the annual festival – Dolly Parton drew Glastonbury’s biggest ever elo logocrowd in 2014, while Lionel Richie’s appearance last year sent him to the top of the chart.

Originally known as Electric Light Orchestra, ELO was formed by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood in 1970. They had an 18-year run of hits in the 1970s and 1980s, including Roll Over Beethoven, Telephone Line, Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Livin’ Thing and The Diary of Horace Wimp and of course Mr Blue Sky which still commands regular radio airplay in the UK. In total the ELO sold 50 million records before Jeff Lynne called time in 1988.

After years in the music wilderness an on-air campaign by BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans cajoled the band into reuniting in 2013 for elo telephone line vinyl singlea one-off show in Hyde Park. The public response and demand was so overwhelming that Jeff Lynne returned to the recording studio and began work on a new album, Alone in the Universe, under the moniker Jeff Lynne’s ELO. The album subsequently went platinum in the UK, while ELO stole the show at last year’s Grammy Awards.

Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis summed up the Record Press author’s sentiments with her tweet: “Yes! ELO are playing this year’s Glastonbury Sunday teatime slot. Can’t wait!”

Farewell Terry Wogan, Doyenne of Disc Jockeys

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of broadcaster and bon viveur Terry Wogan.

My  immediate thoughts, which are always the most instinctive and therefore accurate, are that Terry Wogan was a lovely, amiable and affable chap. Heterry wogan floral dance vinyl was everybody’s favourite uncle; a member of your family. Terry Wogan possessed a bonhomie that masked a rapier wit – mischievous and cheeky, irreverent and rebellious but never cruel or callous. He was gentle: a gentleman in the true, pure sense of the word.

On TV Terry Wogan mercilessly teased his Wogan chat show guests, Blankety Blank panellists and Eurovision contestants alike but got away with it because of his self deprecating nature and humour. On radio he gently mocked his listeners ( affectionately nicknamed “TOGGS” – Terry’s Old Geezers & Gals ), but most of all he sent himself up. Terry Wogan was the consummate broadcaster because behind that deceptively languid style and delivery was a bright intellect, knowledge and mastery of language. A wordsmith of the highest  order, fuelled and fired by a vivid, technicolour imagination.

I was lucky enough to attend a BBC1 Wogan chat show in 1988 and spent time with him in the “Green Room” afterwards as a guest of his TV producer Peter Estall. Terry simply came across as a genuine, self-effacing person with humility and no ego. That was the essence of the man.

Terry Wogan was the Doyenne of Disc Jockeys. He waxed lyrical with warmth. We will all miss him dreadfully and radio and television will never be quite the same ever again.Framed Vinyl Single MFR

A reminder that Mott The Hoople could’ve been so much more

The recent news that Dale Griffin, drummer for rock group Mott The Hoople, had died brought into sharp focus what a good band Mott The Hoople were, but how they never fulfilled their potential.

Although Mott The Hoople shone very brightly with songs like Roll Away The Stone and All The Young Dudes, the sad thing was they simply didn’t do it for long enough.mott the hoople

Mott The Hoople recorded eight albums during their five-and-a-half year existence. They won a record contract in early 1969 and went to London to record under producer Guy Stevens, who renamed the band Mott the Hoople after a 1967 novel by Willard Manus.

Although Mott The Hoople created a strong fanbase and cult following, they struggled commercially and were on the verge of breaking up in 1972, until David Bowie stepped in and persuaded them to stay together, under the guidance of his manager Tony De Fries.

David Bowie also very generously offered them the song Suffragette City, which amazingly they declined. Refusing to mott the hoople all the young dudes vinyl singlegive up on them David Bowie then wrote the anthemic All The Young Dudes for Mott The Hoople. The narrative of All The Young Dudes forms part of the story of Bowie’s alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.

All The Young Dudes  reached No2 in the UK charts and the top 40 in America, giving Mott The Hoople the new lease of life they required. Later albums produced UK hits such as Honaloochie Boogie, All The Way From Memphis, Roll Away The Stone the Record Press author’s personal introduction to the band – the Golden Age of Rock’n’Roll.

Sadly no sooner had I been introduced to Mott The Hoople in 1974 and the band disintegrated when lead singer Ian Hunter, suffering from physical exhaustion, cancelled their entire European tour. When rumours then spread that he was making a solo album with David Bowie’s guitarist Mick Ronson, it led to an irrevocable rift in the ranks of Mott The Hoople.

The sad thing for me is that unlike their mentor David Bowie, Mott the Hoople didn’t make the most of their talent. And that’s a great pity. They never quite reached the heights their talent and charisma promised; they regrettably left a void of unfulfilled potential.
